I am a trained mechanical engineer currently running a successful Technology faculty in a Secondary School. We are due to start the Diploma in September and have set aside a week in July for preparing staff. We are short of practical resources for Engineering, although we are otherwise well equipped to teach Systems and Control, and we have small numbers of students who choose A level Technology and do reasonably well.
Our staff are apprehensive but are keen to work as a team to upskill ourselves.  Other than the Edexcel courses, which tell you about course requirements, there doesn't seem to be any specific training for D&T conversion. We have a link with the local FE college who are planning for L2 and L3 Engineering. We aim to do the L2 work in our school through team teaching.

I found this forum by accident and would welcome advice from anyone else in a similar position.

Our LA doesnt seem very interested in Diplomas. I have been pressing for us (D&T) to get involved with the Engineering Diploma but there is a view that we should avoid them as long as possible. Our department is very successful in GCSE D&T.

I would like to be able to report back on how other schools are preparing for Engineering and Manufacturing. Are there any schools that are really on top of preparing for these that can give us a steer?

We are also looking to develop an Engineering area and the range of resources needed. We are lucky in having Governors who want this school to be a lead centre for this subject and they have provided the money for us to set things up.
We are looking for advice on how to set up the rooms, but like you we will also welcome help with organising the teaching of the subject units.
We are told that this will be organised by our lead person in the LA for the Eng Dip but I dont have details as yet.
Looking at the 8 level 2 units there is a fair bit of general stuff to be studied at the beginning so I think we will have time to set things up as we go along. Not ideal but we are a mixed team and it will take time. No-one has really asked us whether we really are able to deliver this. The bids assumed that we were perfectly confident - not quite the real story I am afraid. There are supposed to be links with the college but nothing much has happened yet.

Can anyone starting Engineering in September share some of their plans over the year?
I would like to know if I am doing the right things - particularly  in relation to staff support, college liaison, industry links (difficult in this area of the country), setting up online resources for students, etc.
I would really welcome sight of someone's lesson plans for the first few months in particular. I don't want to put the students off with too much written work.
