I visited your stand at the Data conference in Loughborough recently. I liked the Flexy PIC system you were showing. We are starting engineering in 2009. We have had some good meetings with staff at the FE college and not bad support from the LA but there is still a lot to do over the next year to plan the course, get kids interested in doing it, and seeing what extra kit we will need. What can your company do for schools over the next year to help us set this up? I dont know what funds will be available so is there an easy way to buy into your system? We have exam board training in the diary but do you offer anything specific to your system?

Thanks Londongeezer. It may have been me that you spoke to on the stand.
The unique thing about both the Engineering and Manufacturing Diplomas is the range of 'system level' studies which require practical resources. The Flexy1 was designed to meet this need. It is a factory in miniature and provides access to studies in systems software development, fail-safing, cross-technology functional development, fault-finding, and many production issues which a 'component approach' will not provide. We have pitched this system (which comes with a class set of systems development boards) at schools planning to deliver Level 2 Engineering.
Those Consortia that have ordered Flexy1 systems for their schools will also be involved with extending and testing the teaching materials that will go with the machine. Consortia do have funding for this and it counts as teacher development. In the initial trial year we expect it will be largely consortia that purchase our system. In the following years we expect purchases to be made directly by schools which are planning now for the 2009 delivery of the Engineering and Manufacturing Diplomas.
Flexy1 is an unusual kind of system for a school to buy. Some may think it more expensive than what they are used to buying through capitation. But if schools wish to deliver Level 2 studies they will need to be as well-equipped as their local FE college - with whom they will probably work closely with in the first few years.
We are offering both initial and ongoing support for the use of this system. It isn't a 'sale and forget' arrangement. We aim to keep closely in touch with all participating schools and provide an increasing range of support in conjunction with a range of partners.
